Ailing Cherry Tree

My lovely cherry tree which is dear to me for sentimental reasons has blobs of a gooey amber coloured substance on the bole and some of the branches and we have already removed a branch on which all the leaves were withered. Can anyone suggest a cure? I am loath to lose it. Fingers crossed. Also I lost my Cordeline to the very hard winter and now have planted a pretty clematis at the base and it is already climbing nicely ( Monty Don’s tip – thanks Monty – my favourite TV gardener. I will post photo when I have a little more growth. Hoping for the best as I am a rather hit and miss gardener. My garden is rather a jumble of plants and the original plan is more or less still discernable in spite of my habit of sticking in plants willy-nilly. bredakelly
