Got Weird Veggies or Funny Fruit?

The Lochness Cucumber, grown by Ron S. Doyle of Denver, won the 2009 Weird Veggie and Funny Fruit contest sponsored by WesternGardeners.com.

Have you ever grown a tomato with a nose or a potato with Mickey Mouse ears? What about a carrot with legs or a heart-shaped raspberry?

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of vegetable and fruit anomalies. Even though gardeners strive for picture-perfect produce, Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate. Her sense of humor shows through when she tinkers with the growing environment just enough to create odd-shaped fruits and veggies.

Because I’ve found some unusual specimens in my garden, I decided it would be fun to sponsor an annual Weird Veggie and Funny Fruit contest on my website, WesternGardeners.com. Ron S. Doyle of Denver took first place honors in 2009 with his creature from the deep called The Lochness Cucumber. Runners-up included the Who You Calling Ugly? tomato and The Claw carrot.The Weird Veggie and Funny Fruit contest is on again this year to find the strangest looking vegetable or fruit you’ve either grown in your own garden or found at your local farmer’s market.

The contest is open to any gardener in the U.S. or Canada. To enter, just take a digital photo of your crazy-looking produce, attach it to an email and send to jodi@WesternGardeners.com. The contest ends September 1 at midnight (Mountain Time).

Entries will be judged by a fellow gardener who has a special appreciation for nature’s oddities and the winning entry will be announced on September 7.

In addition to the awesome bragging rights, the winner receives a gardener’s gift basket loaded with $50 worth of gardening goodies, including products from Authentic Haven Brand and aHa!Modern Living.

Now it’s time to head outside and start peeking under the leaves to find the weird and wonderful in your garden.
