As we observe Earth Day, heres a look at some of the products being introduced into the marketplace that can be good for your familys health and that of the planet. I learned a creative new use for blueberry plants during a visit to Costco this week. The latest shipment of plants was on display and included the usual ornamental shrubs, trees, and landscape perennials. But of course the thing that caught my eye was the attractive blueberry bushes that were covered with those unusually shaped white flowers!
They looked great and I began checking the varieties when two women approached who were shopping for new plants for their own landscape. For a second they were attracted to the gorgeous blueberry plants until they read a label and realized what they were.

I’m hearing a rumor that homeowners are planting only Knock Out roses in their landscapes, eschewing the luxuriant, intoxicating Old Garden Roses that billow, perfume the air and send flower lovers swooning at the sight of bushes in peak bloom.
It is easy to believe this rumor is accurate. Knock Out roses in red or pink fill front beds in many subdivisions, are planted in corners at busy intersections and bloom in many sunny commercial landscapes.
Knock Out roses are excellent landscape roses. I don’t quarrel with that distinction. They are the answer for many who do not want to tend to a traditional garden.
